Dobby's History
Read articles in today’s health and wellness magazines and you’ll find experts reminding us that taking time to savor good wine, wholesome food and the company of family and friends will help us live happier and even longer lives.

That was more than a philosophy for Abraham “Dobby” Dobkin – it was a way of life for the more than 50 years that he owned Dobby’s World-Wide Liquors.

Dobby always encouraged the enjoyment of great food, wine, and spirits. In fact, the store was one of the first retailers to offer in-store tastings and to host winemaker and wine pairing dinners at fine restaurants in the Chicago area.

Considered one of the deans of wine retailing in the country, Dobby shared his knowledge with customers, suppliers and even other retailers – many of whom he mentored over the years.

It all came from a personal philosophy that selling wines is a “people” business, and Dobby’s great pride in his personal relationships.

Dobby loved his store, steadfastly remaining independent even as other Mom-and-Pop shops succumbed to the pressures of the big-box era. So, when it came time to step aside, he looked for a buyer who shared his philosophy of independence, value, and personal relationships with both customers and the community.

Dobby finally found the right man for the job in Palatine resident Ray Franczak, who purchased the store in April of 2007.

Visit Dobby’s today, and you’ll find not much has changed.

Ray and the entire store staff remain dedicated to maintaining the same excellent personal service and quality products that put Dobby’s on the map. Dobby’s World-Wide still strives to offer the most creative wine, spirit and food events, and the most fun store atmosphere to our customers.

At Dobby’s, we’re honored to be a part of our customers’ traditions, and we’re proud to know so many of our customers by name.

And that stuff about helping people live happier and longer lives? We think that’s pretty cool too.

Dobby’s: Living up to a World-Wide name without the attitude.
